Making Connections in our Reading

On Friday we read a book by Mem Fox called Wilfred Gordan McDonald Partrige. It was a beautiful story that spoke of the relationship between a young boy and an older woman from a nursing home that was losing her memory. Wilfred Gordan was able to find a way to help the lady remember some memories from her childhood. Students did a great job afterwards making connections between the two sets of memories during an oral retelling of the story.
This is the second book that we have read from this famous Australian author and we look forward to reading more of her work.

Take Home Reading

Dear Families,

Today we are starting our Take Home Reading program. Students have chosen a book to read to you tonight. I have suggested that students set a goal of reading for 15 minutes each night. We spent a lot of time reviewing "Just Right" books and students are eager to get started. We will continue sending our Poetry books home on Mondays and our Take Home Reading bags will come home Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week.

Thanks for your support.

Fire Safety Week

2F students were fortunate to have many guests this week to help them review their fire safety skills. Mr. Shuttleworth, a firefighter with the Windsor Fire Department paid a visit to our classroom to share his experiences with students. Later in the week our local fire department, the Kingsville Fire Department, came to the school with their equipment. Students watched a great video on Fire Safety and then participated in a simulated smoke filled environment to review the necessary steps to get out safely. They got to sit in the fire trucks, see a fireman dressed in full gear and practise "stop, drop and roll." Please take the time to review your own fire safety plan and be sure your child knows their address and phone number in the event of an emergency.

Happy Thanksgiving

Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.

Can You Guess Who the Baby Is?

We had so much fun with our 2F Timeline Bulletin Board that I decided to attempt a slide show so parents could see all of the adorable babies... 2F students can try and guess who their classmates are too. Have fun!

Today we read the story "All the Places to Love" by Patricia MacLachlan. The story was illustrated with paintings by Mike Wimmer and students were quite impressed with his work. This story is a great introduction to our current Social Studies topic of Traditions. We were able to find many traditions that this family participated in. 2F students have been asked to go home and interview their families about the traditions that take place in their homes. Information can be recorded on the sheet provided and should be returned to school by Friday so we can share our family traditions with each other.
Thanks for your continued support. Lise Fellbaum

Lines of All Kinds

2F students were very surprised to see all of the different attributes that lines could have; horizontal, diagonal, vertical, thick, thin, broken, zigzag, wavy, looped, curly and scalloped. It was great fun to apply this knowledge to paper with some paint and a paintbrush. Check out the artists in action....
