The Gingerbread Mystery
Greetings,
During the month of December, 1F students worked diligently comparing the characters, settings, and events of a variety of versions of the traditional tale of the Gingerbread Man. We are getting very good at retelling a story!
Next, thanks to the assistance of Mrs. G., we were able to make some delicious gingerbread cookies. We worked very hard decorating the cookies and took great care placing them in the oven to cook. When we went to retrieve our cookies, imagine our surprise when all we found was a note,
"Run, run, run really fast, you can't catch us we are the gingerbread class!"
1F students looked all over the school for the little rascals. They left notes in our gym teacher, Mr. Konrad's class, the office and even in Mrs. Woodruff's library. Poor Mrs. Woodruff thought she may have closed the door on a little brown foot and is pretty sure they left flour on her library floor.
Just before we got ready to go home there was a knock on our classroomdoor. One of the GNPS staff caught the little stinkers running down the hall. Needless to say, we gobbled them up quickly before they could escape again! It was an exciting day!

Canadian Coins
Greetings,
This week we are going to be having some fun with coins during our Numeracy Block. In grade one students are required to name the coins and know their corresponding values. They must also be able to represent money amounts to 20 cents. We have been tracking the number of days we have been at school using coins, daily, during Marvelous Math Minutes so I am hopeful that students find these concepts easy to grasp. Also, students that are proficient rote counting by fives and tens will find this concept less of a challenge.

Our First Book Talks
Greetings,
Each student was invited to bring in a favourite book from home and share a part of the book with us. Some friends read their stories, some did a retelling based on what they remembered and others did a picture walk for us. Students were presented with a variety of literature and this quickly became a highlight of our literacy block as we anticipated the next book to come in.
Thanks for your continued support of our program.

Online Advent Calendar
Greetings,
This is a link to an online advent calendar that is lots of fun.
http://ngfl.northumberland.gov.uk/christmas/advent07/adventcalendar2007.html
Each day students get to hear about things that happen in Santa's home during the 24 days before Christmas. If you click on the text the story will be read to you. There is also a little mouse hiding in each picture. If you click on the ears of the mouse he will pop out.

Bullying Presentation
Greetings,
Today students heard a presentation from Mr. Neuts on Bullying. Mr. Neuts' son, Myles died when he was ten years old as a result of a bullying incident. Mr. Neuts now travels to schools to speak to students about bullying in the hopes of eliminating bullying from our schools. It was a very powerful presentation for our young students. We have been talking about bullying, reading books and viewing videos on the topic in the classroom. Mr. Neuts will be doing an adult only presentation tonight in our gym at 6:30p.m. It is important that every child feels safe and accepted at school. In 1F we will continue to work hard to insure that happens.

Gosfield Wind Farm Presentation
Greetings,
Last week we were treated to a visit from one of the engineers from the Gosfield Wind Farm, as one of our students has a special connection and was able to convince our guest to come and visit. Students were able to see first hand all of the steps involved in the construction of a wind turbine. It was interesting to see all of the different professions that are involved and all eyes were glued to the SMART board as we watched a slide show showing all of the different stages. As can be seen in the photos below another highlight was trying on the safety equipment.
Thanks so much to our special visitor. If you should have any questions about the construction of the Gosfield Wind Farm please just ask one of us, since we are now quite familiar with the process involved:}

Pete the Cat - I Love My White Shoes
Greetings,
A good friend sent us a link to a story her class really enjoyed. Today we had a lot of fun watching and reading this live telling of the story Pete the Cat - I Love My White Shoes, written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. This story has a great message for us all.
Enjoy!

A Visit from a Daycare Supervisor
Greetings,
1F students had an opportunity today to learn about what it takes to run a daycare. We talked about all of the different things that make a child's experience at daycare a positive one. Then we did a science experiment together and were given some levelled books to add to our library. Students were also given a sample of the mysterious Goopy Goo to take home. What an exciting way to begin our day. Many thanks for all of our goodies today !
This is the recipe for Goopy Goo if you would like to try it at home.
Goopy Goo
Begin with 4 teaspoons of Borax.
Mix 1 cup of hot water and leave this in a separate container.
In a different container pour one cup of white glue and mix it with one cup of water.
Then pour the glue solution into the Borax solution and observe what happens.
Do not mix it but just swish it around in the bowl.
Yank it out and place on cookie sheet. There will be some excess liquid.
The video below highlights the fun we had today.

A Visit from our Community Police Officer
Greetings,
During one of our student presentations last week we were treated to a visit from Officer Bertoni, who has been assigned to GNPS as our community liason officer this year. Officer Bertoni spoke to the grade one students about his job and the role of a police officer in the community. Students had an opportunity to ask questions and view his uniform and equipment. As can be seen in the pic below, Officer Bertoni's visit coincided perfectly with our student presentation that day.

Greetings,
1F was a very busy classroom last week as we worked on getting to know each other and reviewing some basic concepts. Hopefully the adjustment of coming to school every day was not too overwhelming. I certainly was impressed by the eager smiles greeting me each morning.
The first week was filled with many new adventures for 1F students like getting a table spot, using our pencil cases, getting to go to music class with Mrs. Dalley for the first time and finding our new bus locations at the end of the day. I am looking forward to continued new adventures in week two.
I have attached some fun websites for students to try at home below.

Welcome to 1F!
Dear Grade One Families,
Welcome to our Grade One Classroom Blog! My name is Lise Fellbaum and I will be your child's teacher this year. I am very excited to begin our grade one journey together and look forward to our many adventures ahead. Grade One can be a big change as students move from a play based learning environment into a more structured learning environment. But don't worry, we stil have a great deal of fun in Grade one!
I have left last years' classroom blog posts on our blog to give parents an opportunity to look around and see what kind of information we posted last year. I will be sending home a form to be signed that gives me permission to post your child's photo, audio files and/or videos we make in class. Names can never be posted with photos. Students love to see their pictures and share our activities with parents and other family members. Please call me at school if you have any concerns or questions with the blog.
I look forward to working with you throughout the year ahead.

I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there,
The clay they used was a young child's mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher;
the tools she used were books
and music and art;
One was a parent with a guiding hand
and a gentle loving heart.
And when at last their work was done
They were proud of what they had wrought,
For the things they had worked into the child
Could never be sold or bought.
And each agreed they would have failed,
If they had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school,
and behind the teacher stood the home.

When Mr. Peterson Retires........
Greetings,
2F students are really excited about a book we made for Mr. Peterson, the GECDSB Computer Consultant who works with us on the SMART Board project. Mr. Peterson will be retiring at the end of this school year and will be sadly missed by GECDSB employees and students. He has been a great source of inspiration for me throughout my own journey of embedding current technology into my classroom routines.
Mr. Peterson stopped by for a final visit and we presented the book to him. He then posted our book on his own blog, which currently has about 60,000 hits. 2F has become famous.

An Amazing Green Wonderland
Greetings, The students in 2F have been working really hard on explanatory writing during the past six weeks. I am sure you are equally impressed with all of the published pieces that have been sent home for your reading pleasure. Using all of the information that we have learned about rain forests students worked as a group and completed a brilliant explanation. We later used this writing as our mentor text for our final independent piece of explanatory writing. Finally, we added some illustrations and put it altogether in a book for our blog. Enjoy! Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day is to stop people from bullying because it isn't nice to bully other people. People will not want to be your friend and soon you will have no friends. Pinks Shirt Day started by a boy who had his first day in grade nine and he wore a pink shirt to school. Some bullies made fun of him and some older grade twelve boys stood up to the bullies. The next day they wore pink shirts and then others joined in and wore pink shirts to school too. That is how Pink Shirt Day started.
by Mackenzie
On April 14th GNPS students were encouraged to wear a pink shirt to school to send the powerful message that bullying is not acceptable. Way to go Mac, for having the courage to wear a pink shirt on this day!
